Mystery, Beauty and Fun are three themes that keep popping up in my uncommissioned work. Mystery is essential in a true work of art. Modern life, science and technology would have us believe that there are no more mysteries but, quantum physicists especially, tell us the opposite------ that there are endless mysteries and it will always be so. Beauty, the ethereal motion of moonlit clouds, the diamond shimmers of sunlit waters, the late afternoon light on a loved one's face------we can't live without Beauty. We hunger for it. It is food for the soul. And Fun, meaningless Fun. It's something we're in danger of losing as we leave childhood behind. Being childish is one thing, being childlike is the ticket-----so says the Buddha. People have given me boxes of their old stuff, their old, broken stuff like watches, junk jewelry, torn photos etc. Using an industrial strength adhesive, (which only a hammer and chisel can remove) I've glued non-thinking patterns of this stuff onto wooden panels set within shadowbox frames producing a series of 3-D museum-like displays.

The initial collage creates pleasure and suggests meaning. They are primed a number of times then meticulously painted and varnished. These glorified found-art-pieces are incredibly Fun to do. I try to get out of the way and let the creative process take over. Sometimes my art makes sense, especially after some time passes, but most of the time it doesn't. Sense is unimportant. "It's all been done before." Quotes like this must be rooted out and the brain fooled into thinking that it's not been all done before. To create ART I must be free from all my conditioning, from all my ideas about art.
